ABSTRACT

This study comparatively examines the social and cultural backgrounds of the emergence of modern women in colonial-era Korea and Vietnam. In both countries, the appearance of modern women represented a sociocultural phenomenon symbolizing colonial modernization, reflecting social conflicts, contradictions, and the nature of modernity. A shared aspect is that modern women emerged not only due to Western-influenced modernization but also as products of national liberation movements. Traditional women in both countries participated in national struggles, breaking free from patriarchal norms and becoming active societal members. Discourses on the “New Woman” in Korea and Vietnam, led mainly by educated female students and writers, also differed: Korea developed a female literary community where women writers voiced diverse female experiences, whereas Vietnam’s male-dominated literary scene portrayed women’s issues from an enlightening perspective.
