AB - This study aims to explore the experiences of cultural conflict encountered by long-term foreign residents in Korea during funeral-related situations, and to suggest the necessity and direction of funeral culture education. Funeral culture in Korea is a representative example of deep culture, reflecting Confucian values, a collectivist mindset, and implicit emotional expressions— making it a particularly difficult domain for foreign learners to access.
Recognizing the educational importance of this topic, this study conducted in-depth interviews with eight long-term foreign residents from China, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, and Japan who have lived in Korea for over five years and have experienced Korean funeral culture. Through thematic analysis, the study identified key areas of cultural conflict, such as unfamiliarity with hospital funeral halls, discomfort with monetary condolence customs, and challenges in expressing condolences appropriately. The findings suggest that there is a pressing need for systematic education on deep cultural practices such as funerals within Korean language education. Moreover, educational designs that go beyond simple information delivery—incorporating cultural comparison, role-playing, and contextual understanding—are likely to be more effective. This qualitative investigation, grounded in the lived experiences of foreign learners, offers valuable insights for expanding the scope of culture education and fostering emotional and social integration within Korean society.
