We studied the distribution patterns of perforating branch of superficial circumflex iliac artery for flap surgery in Korean. Fifty one thighs from 34 Korean cadavers (17 males/ 17 females) were dissected and standard points were determined as follows: point of anterior superior iliac spine (A), point of pubic tubercle (B), cross point of the line AB and femoral artery (FA), cross point of the femoral artery and the sartorius muscle (FAS), beginning point of superficial circumflex iliac artery (O), and perforating point of superficial circumflex iliac artery (P). We measured the distance and the angles between the standard points. Each frequency of superficial circumflex iliac artery from femoral artery and superficial epigastric artery is 69.6% and 30.4% respectively. The mean distance between the beginning point of superficial circumflex iliac artery (O) and the point A was 7.3±1.3 cm and the mean distance between the point O and the point B was 5.7±0.6 cm. The angle from line OA to line AB was 17.9±8.0and The angle from line OB to the line AB was 24.9±15.1. The mean distance between the perforating point for superficial circumflex iliac artery (P) and the point A was 6.3±2.4 cm and the mean distance between the point P and the point B was 8.3±2.7 cm. The angle from line PA to line AB was 33.4±18.3and the angle from line PB to the line AB was 24.5±14.3. Consequently, the pattern of distribution of superficial circumflex iliac arteries, obtained in this study, will provide useful anatomical backgrounds for the superficial circumflex iliac artery flap surgery in Korean.

Current anatomy education in Korea has been dependent upon foreign textbooks and atlas. Various models and medical devices commonly used in Korea were imported from overseas. Now, it is necessary to design, produce and supply medical education, operative tools and treatment supportive devices customized to Korean human body and constitution. Accordingly, this is the time to assemble and deliver medical data to Korean population. Indivicess from the measurement for various types of bones were calculated, and the results were compared with data from foreign atlas and pictures. Individual drawings of bones from sacrum, hip bone and lower limb were made by using parameters we calculated, thus the atlas of Korean skeleton was constructed from artistic anatomical point of view. As a result, there were significant differences between Korean skeletons and the medical drawings from the oversea edition, and also we found numerous exaggerated and false dimensions without actual measurement. In the present study, we primarily focused on building musculoskeletal system of Korea population and set our goal as utilizing its graphic data for medical education in Korea. The present study would be the first study preparing theoretical foundations of Korean skeletal graphic system based on Korean body shape by comparison with other ethnic groups and foreign graphical models. Simultaneously, we conducted practical construction of the skeletal atlas by employing Korean standard measure data.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) has been concerned in the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders. It is known to modulate emotion, cognition, endocrine activity, motor function, and pain. In the present study, the effects of exogenous thyroxine (T4) on the postnatal development of serotonin-containing neuron in the rat raphe nuclei with fetal alcohol effects were investigated using immunohistochemistry. These experimental animals were divided into three groups : the alcohol-fed group received 35 calories liquid ethanol diet ; the control pair-fed group was fed a liquid diet in dextrin replaced alcohol isocalorically ; alcohol+T4 group received alcohol diet and exogenous thyroxine subcutaneously. After the pups were born, the pups of each were fostered by surragate mother. An average of four pups, one from each litter, were killed at days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 for each of the above three groups. As a result, in alcohol group, serotonin-immunoreactivity was weakly stained at all postnatal ages compared to control pair-fed and alcohol+T4 group. The intensity of serotonin immunoreactivity was more prominent in alcohlol+T4 group than in control pair-fed group at P0. Mature patterns of serotonin-containing neurons were observed in control pair-fed and alcohol+T4 group at P7. A similar developmental pattern of serotonin-containing neuron was observed on and after P7 in control pair-fed and alcohol+T4 group. These results suggest that the increase of serotonin synthesis during early postnatal life caused by maternal administration of exogenous thyroxine may ameliorate fetal alcohol effects, one of the ill effects as a result of the dysthyroid state following maternal alcohol abuse.
