ABSTRACT

For medical students, dissection practice is a process that provides not only medical knowledge but also an opportunity to reflect on the dignity and ethics of life. The purpose of this study was to explore the structure and types of eulogies written by all medical students who participated in the dissection practice course and to analyze the relationships students formed with body donors. A total of 144 second-year medical students participated, and the eulogies written on the first day of dissection practice were collected and subjected to qualitative content analysis. The common structures in the eulogies written by medical students were (1) gratitude, (2) statement of facts, (3) selfintroduction, (4) recognition of importance and value, (5) pledge, and (6) gratitude and remembrance. In addition, the eulogies were divided into four types: (1) letter-type to the deceased and bereaved family, (2) diary-type, (3) declaration-type, and (4) literary writing-type. The eulogy shows the influence of medical students’ perception of donors and their ethical and emotional aspects. Therefore, the results of the study can be used to strengthen ethical reflection in the anatomy class and improve teaching and learning methods.
