ABSTRACT

This thesis aims to review the aspects of multilayered identity attempted by Charlotte Moorman in Nam June Paik’s <Guadalcanal Requiem>. For this, the researcher handles the following research themes in this thesis. First, the researcher establishes the theoretical prospect for analyzing the re-signifying process of body-identity by reviewing Judith Butler’s concepts of body such as ‘materiality’ and ‘performativity’. Second, the researcher reviews Moorman’s aspects of multilayered body identity shown in Nam June Paik’s <Guadalcanal Requiem> (1977). Instead of representing fixed gender role and identity, Charlotte Moorman recomposed her own body through performance in various methods. Moorman recomposed her identity as a legitimate classical cellist, maiden/prostitute located in male-centered discourse, experimental artist performing artistic violations, warrior that was sacrificed in the battle at Guadalcanal Beach, medium, researcher that pursues the truth, cyborg-hybrid machine-body, and intercultural medium that communicates with natives. Moorman’s body revealed the norms crossing her body, and sociopolitical power and influence. Moorman’s body opened the communal world and aimed for the prospect sharing the world with others.digenous peoples. In the process, Moorman’s body revealed norms, socio-political forces and influences that crossed the body. At the same time, Moorman’s body aimed to open up a common world and a horizon to share that world with others.
