ABSTRACT

Food is an important cultural icon in an era of internationalization. Whilewestern food culture has played a dominant role for the past few decades,Asian food culture is expanding its impact through its unique culturalsymbolism, which is inherent in each ethnic food. In this paper, the valueof food is reinterpreted in terms of aesthetic types. These include aestheticsof natural blend of materials, the patience involved in fermenting food, andthe beauty that exists in the various colors of the food. It is also examinedas cultural properties of the Joseon period illustrated in pansori novelsand gisok poems. This paper analyzes food as a medium that representspower, as an important method of curing sicknesses in traditional society,as an illustration of Korean expression of human affection, and lastly as animportant ritual in preparing foods when praying or seeking to fulfill aswish.
