Seoul National University Asia Center (SNUAC) was established in 2009 with the vision of ‘contributing to coexistence and development of Asia by constructing a global hub of Asian studies through creating and sharing emergent knowledge based on the comprehensive integration of regions and themes.’ SNUAC has been forming the basis of research for new knowledge as it strove to overcome the West-centered theoretical system and led the autonomization, localization, and globalization of academic research and education. As the result, SNUAC has successfully performed various research activities including the National Research Foundation of Korea’s university research institute support project, emerging economies research project, constructing five regional research centers and 8 special-themes research programs and global eSchool project, which is an international educational exchange program.
In 2019, SNUAC announced a new vision for the upcoming ten years in commemoration of its tenth anniversary. With the vision of ‘becoming the global hub of Asian studies integrationg regions and themes’, SNUAC seeks to present an Asiatic developmental model and a paradigm for enhancing the quality of life and sustainable development of Asians in order to promote Korea’s role in building a New Asia. For this purpose, the following three aims in research activities were set forth: 1) Collaboration of SNUAC’s six regional centers for interdisciplinary research and exchange to lead future-oriented creation of knowledge and research methodologies; 2) Systematic research of movements and exchanges of people, goods, and ideas for exchange and interaction in Asia in the fast-changing environment at home and abroad; 3) Activities for collecting and processing various data of countries and regions in order to create and share new values. From 2020, SNUAC has been funded by National Research Foundation of Korea’s Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) project with the theme ‘Asias and Mega-Asia: Identities, Dynamics, Data-Telling’, and continues to work on strengthening research capabilities and making its research achievements available worldwide.
