ABSTRACT

There are so many soviet army monuments in Northeastern China andNorth Korea. Most of them has been constructed during 1945 and 1957. This paper examines, first, the historical and commemorational times andthe change of significance of them, second, the effects and influences ofsoviet monument culture on Chinese and North Korean memorial culturein the context of East Asian Cold War studies. The early soviet army monuments were ascribed the meaning ofliberation and mourning, but, the later monuments were distinguishedby the victory and friendship around the pullout of the soviet armyfrom Dalien. The monument culture of soviet army gave a model ofcommemoration culture in two countries including the victory andfriendship tower. The emergent conflict between the USSR and the PRCas well as North Korea’s Juche doctrine, both emasculated the politicalsignificance of the monuments in Northeastern Asia, but the end of theCold War has been those revitalized as the site of the collective memory ofcooperation and friendship, unlike their counterparts in Eastern Europe.
