ABSTRACT

This paper discusses varieties of capitalism in relation to regions and countries and types of social formations. Settler immigrant societies resonate with liberal market economies and liberal democracy. Postfeudal societies are on the verge of heading towards coordinated market economies, social forms of capitalism and variants of social democracy. The second part of the paper asks what is the relationship between singular (capitalism) and plural (capitalisms) conceptualizations and suggests a layered analysis to accommodate common as well as variant components, while noting that among the variants the invariant or the common element is itself a variable in meaning. Thus while liberal, coordinated and state-led market economies are all market economies, the way the market economy is understood differs in each setting.
