AB - This study examines the issue of “authenticity” in tourism by analyzing the case of Gunkanjima (battleship island), which was listed as a UNESCO's world heritage site as the “site of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.”Previous researches have proposed several perspectives on the dimensions of authenticity such as objective authenticity, constructive authenticity, and existential authenticity, where in general, UNESCO’s world heritage requires objective authenticity. Accordingly, the preservation and representation of cultural heritage aimed at UNESCO world heritage listing tend to maximize objective authenticity. However, in the field of tourism, people reinterpret the authenticity of cultural heritage in various contexts, and not all of them conform to objective authenticity. This study introduces various interpretations of authenticity that actually takes place in the various contexts of the field. It also suggests the potential impact of tourism on the authenticity of cultural heritage.
