ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the historical context and differences in celebrating Sun Yat-sen in Mainland China and Taiwan, which are subdivisions under the Cold War and a divisional group system in East Asia. Sun Yat-sen is regarded as the Founding Father of Republic of China, and it can be hypothesized that he will be the subject of the symbol for national legitimacy on both Mainland China and Taiwan. In this study, the period from 1946 to the present is divided into three stages, and the method, content, and emphasis of Sun’s Commemoration are compared. As a result of the review, the symbolic politics regarding Sun Yat-sen has gradually weakened in Taiwan, while the trend of strengthening in Mainland China is gradually confirmed. This is in line with the gradual separation of the history of the Republic of China before 1946 in Taiwan, while Mainland China has gradually fused the history before and after the establishment of New China. Sun Yat-sen, as common memories, are recalled on the way to peaceful unification between Mainland China and Taiwan, but it can be judged that there is little practical utility.
