ABSTRACT

This study investigated certain aspects of the Japanese language by analyzing Senryu composed by high school students (a form of short, humorous, often satirical Japanese poetry) to examine trends in vocabulary usage and the imagery associated with those words as reflected in the works. The analysis revealed the following. In terms of frequently used vocabulary, there was prominent usage of: (1) words related to people, (2) words related to communication including IT, (3) words concerning COVID-19, (4) words about seasons and nature, (5) words reflecting emotions, (6) words about time and periods, and (7) words pertaining to school and daily life. Regarding the imagery associated with these words, distinct tendencies were observed. For example, while “kimi” (you) focused on the relationship between “watashi” (I) and “kimi” (you), “watashi” was portrayed as a being influenced by various others and social environments. Similarly, “sumaho” (smartphones) appeared as essential items yet were consistently associated with negative images, and “kotoba” (words) were depicted either as difficult tools for conveying one’s true feelings or as sources of emotional harm. These findings illustrate diverse and characteristic representations in the senryu poems.
