ABSTRACT

The objective of this research is to empirically analyze how social support influences caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities, in terms of their care-giving responsibilities and satisfaction. This study comprehensively investigated the elements that influence the quality of life of caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities by establishing analytical models including social support, experience of caregiving, and demographic and economic factors, segmented according to the types and sources of support. The research collected data from the caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities over the age of twenty registered in Seoul, and empirically analyzed the data. This research showed that an increase in specialists’ informative support and the community’s emotional support resulted in a decrease in the caregiver’s burden of care. Therefore, social policies that can elevate the informative and emotional support are necessary in order to enhance the life satisfaction of caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities.
