ABSTRACT

It is estimated that the zhongniyue was compiled between 400 BC and 350 BC. Since it is similar to the date of death of Confucius and is likely to be the same as the date of survival of the Zisi(子思), there is a lot of possibility that it is an early version of the lunyu. In addition, in that phrases related to other pre-Qin literature are included, various clues about the formation process of the lunyu and the history of the edition can be secured. This paper first examined the philological characteristics of zhongniyue. First, due to the fact that Confucius was referred to as Zhongni, there is a possibility that it is the work of a school other than the traditional lunyu and Confucian school. Second, it is possible that the degree used in the zhongniyue was edited by a person with a view of the degree of thought due to the related vocabulary. With this in mind, eight phrases that can be compared with the traditional lunyu were selected and analyzed among the Confucius remarks included in the zhongniyue. The conclusions obtained through this are as follows. First, when compared from the perspective of vocabulary, the traditional lunyu is a version in which the contents of the zhongniyue are embodied. Second, in the traditional lunyu, it is possible to clearly grasp the ambiguous context in interpretation through zhongniyue. Third, compared to the traditional version, the Confucius collection compiled during the Warring States Period is an anthology without any special standards or forms. Fourth, Confucius' remarks were constantly processed by later generations until the traditional lunyu was confirmed.
