A Democratic Leadership of the Ministry and Professional Ethics for the Ministers

Today the Protestantism in Korea confronts a serious crisis of confidentiality. In order to overcome such a crisis, I think, it is crucial to establish a democratic leadership of ministry and professional ethics for ministers. In consideration of it I would like to present my opinions on such themes from the perspective of ethics in ministry. Church ministry is a wide scope of practice of the church community as a whole to serve the world according to the concept of mission Dei, therefore covers much wider areas of activities than the traditional pastorate. Ethics in ministry make reflections on institutional formation of the ministry on the one hand, give guidelines on ministerial virtues and obligations in form of professional ethics for ministers on the other. In this sense ethics in ministry deepen and widen the traditional form of the clergy ethics and the pastoral ethics. From the viewpoint of ethics in ministry I would like to deal with three emergent tasks which are closely connected with one another: 1) to argue for professional ethics for ministers; 2) to suggest some principles to overcome the authoritarianism prevailing in church communities and to establish a democratic leadership of the ministry; 3) to articulate some principles to found a collegium of ministers for meeting the needs of professionalization and diversification of the ministry in the world of today. Firstly, I believe that ministers should make efforts to acquire such character and virtues as holiness, love, trustworthiness, altruism, prudence etc. It is necessary to design a code of conduct for ministers. Secondly, I think that a democratic leadership of the ministry should be rooted in the insight that the church is the body of Christ and that it is a charismatic community. In it there is no hierarchy among the gifts of the Spirit but organic connectedness and cooperation between charisma-bearers. Therefore a ministerial leadership should be honest to the principle of koinonia as well as the principle of conciliar formation of the church. Thirdly, I suggest that the collegium of ministers should be founded on the principle that the autonomy of professionals should be respected and that all the colleagues should work together in a responsible partnership.

A Study on Calvin's Political Ethic and It's Effects in Korean Protestant Church

The purpose of this article is to study calvin’s political ethic in the Relation between Church and State and to examine it’s effects in Korean Protestant Church. Calvin’s concept on the Relation Church and State will be summarized as two types. First type is the Augustus’ two Kingdoms. Calvin takes up the Augustinian tradition in Institute. It means by the struggle of the city of God against the city of devil, a conflict which rules world history until the end. Calvin’s second type is the Luther’s the Doctrine of two Regiments. According to Luther, God has instituted two different regiments for the delimitation and dissolution of the devil’s power: the Spiritual regiment and the worldly regiment. In the worldly regiment law, good works, reason, the punishing sword, and rewards for good deeds are valid. Calvin had received the Luther’s the Doctrine of two Regiments in Institute. Meanwhile, Calvin’s political ethic in the Relation between Church and State is the Lordship of Christ. The teaching that the Lordship of christ already now permeates every area of life and thus calls christians everywhere and without division into obedient discipleship is usually attributed to the Reformed tradition. Calvin powerfully had asserted the teaching in Institute. And also,Calvin had the negative view in the right of resistance. he advises people to submit to the governing authorities, according to Romans 13:1. But calvin had asserted two possibilities in the right of resistance. One is the right of resistance against tyranny, the other is the right of resistance toward the authorities against God. Finally, According to my study, Korean Protestant Church divided into three Group in the social participation and the relation between church and state from 1970’s to 1980’s. Ecumenical Group had devoted to democratization and human dignity movement, Conservative Group had devoted to evangelization,asserting the separation between church and state, and Evangelical Group devoted to evangelization and democratization since 1985. Excepting Conservative Group, Ecumenical Group and Evangelical Group has devoted to democratization and human dignity under Calvin’s the Lordship of Christ.

21th Century's Cultural Crisis and Christian Cultural Practice for the Weak

The purpose of this study is to explore an alternative thought and ethic that could be able to liberate alienated weak persons in the crisis of 21th century’s culture, and to discuss the issues for which our churches have to be responsible. First of all, this researcher suggest that the idea of “the weak” connotes not only the people dominated, exploited as a mean and alienated under the political, economical and cultural surroundings by which the weak are confronted in the macro dimension, but the marginalized beings ousted from the gram-molecularly(molaire) oppressive center of the criterions and norms in the micro dimension. This study includes following themes. Firstly this researcher elucidates that the more rapidly the society of information is developing, the more strongly the structure of oppression can take root in the ground and the persons lying in the position of the weakness are not able to escape from the cultural poverty. Secondly I try to search for an alternative thought and ethic for the weak. Under the existing conditions even a new community in the era of information,cyber space community is bound up in the restraint and confinement of another structure, this researcher argues we can discover the alternative thought so as to overcome our present situation in the light of G. Deleuz and F. Gattari’s thought of rhizome and the theory of materialistic desire, and futhermore in order to conceptualize persuasively the transformative subject or the escape subject I intend to bring the difference of the weak and the strategy of “becoming”(devenir) into relief. And also through E. Levinas’ ethic for the Others, I appeal that differences make ethic possible and that it is absolutely necessary to account ethically for the differences because there are differences. Finally this researcher tries to find out alternatives for the weak to succeed in organizing their own culture and producing the liberating praxis for themselves. And I make an conclusion that I suggest some distinctive characters and practical tasks of christian culture briefly.
