AB - Schillebeeckx’s idea of the ‘anonymous Christian’ accounts for those who cooperate with God’s universal salvific will even though they do not apprehend it explicitly. In this connection, as a force to resist injustice and suffering, ‘critical negativity’ connotes both political and mystical meaning. In Schillebeeckx’s theol- ogy, salvation is not confined to socio-political liberation. The ‘anthropological constants,’ that must be presupposed for understanding human behavior and existence in his theology, provide a framework for his understanding of salvation.
According to Schillebeeckx, Christian salvation aims at a state in which ‘humanum’ is fully realized by satisfying various condition-physical, mental, so- cio-political, relational, and spiritual conditions. In this context,’ ethical martyr- dom’ means the life of enduring difficulties caused by one’s commitment to promoting humanity. In contrast, ‘Christian religious martyrdom’ refers to a Christian life of persevering pains and problems due to his effort of realizing God’s will within an eschatological hope, which has already been realized but has not yet been completed. Schillebeeckx’s theological concept of ‘ethical martyrdom sug- gests a social spirituality through which the Christian church can evangelize the world through an interreligious dialogue and in conjunction with a non-religious social movement.
