ABSTRACT

While diagnosing the modern age as a zombie society, this study analyzed its characteristics based on Bauman’s liquid modernity. In order to find an ethical alternative, the narrative of <Kingdom>, a representative zombie content in Korea, was analyzed. This study looked at the ontological adventure of Lee Chang, the main character of <Kingdom>, through the ontological adventure process of Levinas. Lee Chang’s ‘sympathy’ for the reality of people and his determination to sacrifice himself to approach others was a concrete practice of ‘hospitality.’ Along with this analysis, this study presented sympathy and hospitality as an ethical alternative to overcome human-phobia prevalent in zombie society. For the approach to sympathy, the concept of Seo(恕) in the Ease-Asian tradition was examined, and Levinas’ philosophical reflection and Derrida's ethical meaning on hospitality were also considered. Finally, to find the possibility of unconditional hospitality as claimed by Derrida, the dialectical meaning of Ricoeur‘s love and justice was examined, which was interpreted as a dialectical practice of hospitality and sympathy
