ABSTRACT

Political participation is unavoidable for the visible church as a social reality within society. While such engagement can provide an opportunity for the church to manifest the public power of the gospel and contribute to the common good, it requires a theoretical framework capable of interpreting the dynamic structures and historical conditions of a pluralistic modern society. This article introduces the social theory and the Two Kingdoms doctrine of Eilert Herms and seeks to contribute to the development of a theoretical foundation for political engagement within Korean church and theology. Herms’s social theory defines the formal aims of the church’s political participation by situating the church within the religious functional system of society, through which it may influence other functional systems. His Two Kingdoms doctrine presents the substantive aims of such participation by articulating God’s two modes of governance and calling the church to responsible political engagement for the sake of a pluralistic society. Together, these perspectives invite critical reflection from churches that have lost social credibility through their political involvement.
