ABSTRACT

This study analyzes Paul’s admonition concerning the mutual responsibility between the teacher and the community in Galatians 6:6-10, redefining ‘the one who is taught the word’ (τῷ κατηχοῦντι) not merely as a conveyor of knowledge but as a ‘Mentor’. This relationship is predicated upon ‘Koinonia’(κοινωνί α)-a holistic sharing of life and spiritual resources—beyond material support. Paul’s command provides an alternative community ethic that counters the structural dependence of teachers in Greco-Roman society and the exclusive communal practices of Jewish tradition, establishing teachers and students as equal partners in the Gospel. Theologically, the research highlights the principle of sowing and reaping (6:7-8), extending ethical practice into the spiritual principle of ‘sowing to the Spirit’. Sowing to the flesh reaps ‘corruption’ (destruction), while sowing to the Spirit ultimately reaps ‘eternal life’. The mentor’s identity is defined by the rejection of empty glory and the practice of self-examination when restoring members with a spirit of gentleness. The ultimate goal of this discipleship is the formation of a ‘new creation’ (6:15), fulfilling the Law of Christ (6:2) within a community where all old distinctions are invalidated. Based on these foundations, the study proposes concrete practices for contemporary Christian communities, including ensuring the sustainability of ministry through practical support for the mentor (6:6), urging perseverance in doing good (6:9), and prioritizing good deeds ‘especially to those who belong to the family of faith’(6:10).
