ABSTRACT

Despite the proliferation of discipleship training programs, Korean Christianity continues to face criticism for its lack of social spirituality. This paper offers a virtue-ethical reading of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s understanding of discipleship. First, drawing on R. W. Moberly’s interpretation, it examines the formation and cultivation of a character marked by absolute obedience to Jesus Christ. Second, engaging Stanley Hauerwas’s interpretation, it considers Bonhoeffer’s vision of a community shaped by confession and forgiveness, thereby seeking to constitute a ‘truth-telling community.’ These perspectives yield significant insights for contemporary discipleship training: moving beyond the limited horizons of programmatic approaches and Bible study groups, greater emphasis must be placed on the cultivation of Christian character.
