ABSTRACT

In the late nineteenth century, foreign missionaries in Korea relied on Korean lay assistants to navigate linguistic and cultural barriers, yet their leadership has been largely overlooked. This study examines Elder Yun Gi-hwa, a lay assistant at the Anna Davis Industrial Shop of Soongsil College, focusing on the formation and practice of his ethical leadership. Using a thematic oral life history approach, the study draws on testimonies, archives, and artifacts. It finds that Yun’s leadership was rooted in biblical resilience, communal care, and moral courage under colonial rule, highlighting the vital role of Korean lay leaders in sustaining early Protestant missions.
