AB - This article reconsiders John Wesley as a “biblical ethicist” who interprets ethical reality through Scripture and shapes both the mode of existence of believers and the communal life of the church. Focusing in particular on his thirteen consecutive sermons on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5–7 (Standard Sermons 21–33), the study analyzes Wesley’s understanding of biblical ethics, his methodological approach, and its distinctive features. In doing so, it highlights the perspective that Scripture should not be regarded merely as a “catalogue of ethical norms,” but rather as the testimony to an event that reconstitutes the entirety of human existence within the structure of the gospel. From this perspective, rereading Wesley as a biblical ethicist within the context of the Korean church offers an opportunity to move beyond a reductive use of Scripture as an ethical instrument. Instead, it invites a renewed theological imagination that discerns how the gospel reconfigures the life of the church and the existence of believers. Such a recovery, moreover, may overcome the long-standing divisions that have separated ethics from salvation, interior faith from concrete practice, and the individual from the community. Ultimately, it points toward the church’s public witness that embodies the life of the Kingdom of God within the present reality of the world.
