AB - The care crisis in contemporary Korean society extends beyond the shortage of welfare services to raise ethical questions concerning human vulnerability, interdependence, and the social organization of care responsibilities. This study employs a literature review and theoretical analysis to examine the development and political expansion of care ethics and critically explores Joan Tronto’s theory of caring democracy from the perspective of Christian social ethics. Particular attention is given to a critical reinterpretation of Tronto’s concepts of relationality, caring responsibility, and democratic participation within a Christian ethical framework.
Tronto’s caring democracy reconstructs care as a principle of public responsibility and democratic participation. This study argues that Christian social ethics critically appropriates this framework through the perspectives of relational anthropology, love of God and neighbor, the common good, and the public mission of the church, thereby extending its normative foundation and communal practice through the concept of a democratic caring community. Care is presented not merely as a private moral virtue but as a central principle of social ethics for realizing democratic responsibility and the common good. Accordingly, the church is understood as a public community called to embody and practice a democratic caring community.
