AB - This study reconstructs the church’s public role and ethics of responsibility amid the climate and ecological crisis. Drawing on Giorgio Agamben’s critique of biopolitics, it examines how the suffering and survival conditions of nonhuman creatures are subject to differential protection, institutional marginalization, and public invisibility. It does not directly extend homo sacer, a concept developed to explain human political and juridical exclusion, to nonhuman creatures. Instead, Donna Haraway’s multispecies and relational thought provides a bridge for employing Agamben’s analysis of differential protection and sovereign exclusion in a limited and analogical manner. As a theological response, this study ecologically reinterprets Lee Jong-sung’s holistic theology and public ecclesiology, while acknowledging that he did not develop an ecological theology. His holistic understanding of creation and redemption, relational account of human responsibility, and vision of the public church provide resources for ecological reconstruction. The study proposes redefining the common good as the shalom of creation, publicly recognizing invisible suffering and disenfranchised grief, and institutionalizing ecological responsibility by limiting human freedom and power for the good of the whole community of life. Ultimately, the church is called to become an ecologically oriented public community that remembers creation’s suffering and bears witness to its integrity.
