Three wording & Description of sensibility - The character of style expressed in Kim, Hun’s “Hwa-Jang

ABSTRACT

The style is the useful frame of explanation and evaluation for literary works in that it puts together forms and contents from the matter of forms；‘How to express’ to the matter of contents；‘What is expressed’. In this point of view, I’ve discussed that what style in Kim Hun’s “Hwa-Jang” expressed death and life, and human being or living. Kim, Hun’s “Hwa-Jang” has three types of description relating to the stories of the wife, Chu, Eun-ju, and ‘I’ as an executive director of a cosmetic company. Through each description, each character of style is caught. In the description of the wife, the wording of contradiction putting something contrary or heterogeneous each other in the same position is expressed as the character of style, through which death is put as contradictory and as much unknown. Then, in the description of Chu, Eun-ju, the wording of denial making the later depiction opposed to the former one is used, and through this character of style, life is expressed as beyond our reach because of its certainty and ambiguousness. In the last description of ‘I’ as an executive director of a cosmetic company, the wording of the segment in which one object is divided into pieces and then each piece is listed through using commas can be analyzed; this character of style implies that ‘I’ is not free from falsehood and fraud of the daily life by expressing the side of falsehood and fraud in the job of ‘I’. The descriptions related with sensibility which is the main character of the styles through the whole work are connected with the narrator ‘I’ as the central point of overlapping three descriptions, and play the role to emphasize the body of the narrator ‘I’ that has such a tool by emphasizing that the narrator ‘I’ recognizes reality by the experience through the sensibility and describes the recognized contents. The descriptions also imply that the body of the narrator ‘I’ means the disappearing one through the description concerning the body of the narrator ‘I’. Therefore, it can be inferred that the human being expressed in the “Hwa-Jang” is the one that has the disappearing body moving toward the death. And the meaning of life expressed in the “Hwa-Jang” is then revealed with the overlapped meanings of the three formerly referred descriptions highlighting the disappearing human body. It can be said that the living expressed in the “Hwa-Jang” is the living which is not free from falsehood and fraud with our approaching the death which is contradictory and unknown at the back of the life itself which is certain, ambiguous and beyond our reach.
