ABSTRACT

This paper aims to examine some vocabularies published around 1910, and to show some aspects of accepting newly coined words in this period. The main tendency of accepting newly coined words in this period is that newly coined words were divided into two kinds of terms, namely ordinary terms and technical terms. It was distinguished from the previous tendency that all of newly accepted words were collected irrespective of the characteristics of terms, and enrolled in a kind of dictionaries or vocabularies. For investigating the acceptance of ordinary terms, we examined four vocabularies: The Comparative Examples of Korean-Japanese Words by the Han-Sung Foreign Language Public Schoolpublished in 1911, The Comparative Examples of Japanese-Korean Words by the Japanese Government General of Korea published in 1911, The Comparative Examples of Korean–Japanese Words by the Japanese Government General of Korea published in 1917, The Comparative Examples of Korean–Japanese Words by Okuyama Senyama published in 1928. For investigating the acceptance of technical terms, we examined two vocabularies: The Q&A on Newly Accepted Words published serially in the newspaper The Daehanminbo from 1909 to 1910, The Newly Accepted Words in Use published as a appendix of the revised edition of The Newest Letters by Yuilseokwan published in 1912. We compared words found in above-mentioned vocabularies with words found in two dictionaries, amely the Korean Dictionary by the Japanese Government General of Korea published in 1920 and the Korean Dictionary by Moon, Se-Young published in 1938. As a result, we statistically and concretely identified the process of accepting newly accepted words around 1910.
