ABSTRACT

This thesis deals with the main problems that I faced when I modernize Korean classical literatures, and as well as my own solution for that problems. What I want to say by this thesis is about the modernization of Korean classical literatures based on the communication with modern-general readers. Notifying content and meaning to the readers is an important point for mutual understanding between the readers and the books. For successful modernization, some of elements like vocabulary, lingual style, or characteristic description should be removed or changed. Especially, the elements that exist only in classical novel should be adjusted, so the general readers can understand and comprehend. Also the contents should be changed modernistically. But there should be no distorting the original message in the progress of modernization. Because of this, modernization of classical literatures doesn't mean literal translation. One more thing I want to say further is that we need to upbring the experts who are able to modernize the classical novels. First of all, education for decoding hand-written version is required to upbring the experts. And also that experts have to practice modernizing classical novels in the standpoint of translation. At this point, it is necessary for the translators to have literal sense and talent. Because the modernization is a progress of replacing literature with literature. In that way, classical sense of beauty or the expression that classical literature provides can be preserved.
