AB - Argumentative essay is text written logically with reasonable grounds and reasons, and it needs a rational opinion, reasonable grounds, and logical explication. Studies have been done on the necessity and methods of argumentative writing education utilizing debate, because writing argumentative essay and debate are both communication act using reasoning. So this study analyzed empirically effects of debate in writing argumentative essay. I compared outlines written before debate and outlines written after debate in writing argumentative essay lesson for KAIST students, and the result shows that the subject and structure of essay, grounds for opinion and data have changed. In other words, debate caused effects that it seeks rational opinions and improve the validity of grounds. Especially, free debate used in this study played a role as a chance to examine for controversial issues from various angles and to find solutions together, and it changed the subjects of texts to produce synthesis and to seek solutions.
