Known as the first fish dictionary, 「Uhaeieobo」(1803) finds a way to operate the letter “hyeongseong notation”, a special notation of Kim Ryeo. hyeongseong notation can be seen as having a literal value, as it can supplement the concept of determinatives. In this paper, we are looking for relevance between the hyeongseong notation and determinatives from the standpoint of the Grammatology. First, to understand the concept of determinatives in Grammatology, look at the process of occurrence of rebus, determinatives, and phonetic complement in the development of world writing systems. Based on this, it will find out how such a method of letter management is related to the way Korea’s Chinese character󰠏borrowing system. Determinatives in Korea’s Chinese character󰠏borrowing system are not identical to the concepts in Grammatology. Therefore, opinions on the concept of determinatives vary in academia. There are many opinions such as ‘a clear indication of the meaning of the preceding symbol, determinative itself is a phonetic symbol, determinative has no meaning, not only sound, but also meaning, a sign to read meaning the preceding character’. However, in Kim Ryeo’s 「Uhaeieobo」(1803) hyeongseong notation, there is a symbol called 魚, which can be seen as a determinative. The determinative does not have its own sound and clarifies the meaning of the preceding letter. There are also examples of other words being read phonetic and meaning. It is to be emphasized that “typically, letters combined with the determinatives were read ‘phonetic reading’, but in some special cases, they were read ‘meaning reading’”. It is also to confirm that the determinative is one of the universal feature of writing operation found in the development of writing system. In this regard, we expect the literal value of the fish's name in 「Uhaeieobo」 to be given new light.
