ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to suggest a questionnaire that can be presented to Intermediate, advanced level Korean language learners when educating Korean culture using Joseon Dynasty genre paintings. And it is to propose writing and speaking activities that can be done using the knowledge accumulated in the process of solving this questions. Th e educational material is a Album of Genre Paintings by Kim Hong-do, a painter in the late Joseon Dynasty. Kim Hong-do’s genre paintings realistically recorded the appearance of people’s lives at the time, such as their everyday job, play culture, and daily lives. At the same time, the expressions and posture of the characters in the genre painting were vividly described. He added humorous and satirical elements by processing their gaze or placing the character in an unexpected place. These are sufficient factors to arouse the interest of Korean language learners when educating Korean culture using Kim Hong-do’s genre paintings. Through this study, I hope to diversify the educational methods to teach Korean culture, using not only modern and popular culture but also traditional one such as genre painting.
