Yu Sook gi(兪肅基, 1696~1752) had never held a high government post, nor is he a man of outstanding academic achievement. However, he has become a notable figure in the study of Korean old novel. In his eulogy for his wife, who passed away in 1746, he mentioned the Korean classic fiction Yussi Samdaerok(Story of three generations of the Yu family). In his eulogy, Yu Sook gi noted that his wife compared the character in the novel to his nephew. This record serves as evidence that Yussi Samdaerok was written before 1746. Since there are very few data on classical novels from the first half of the 18th century, this data needs to be examined in more detail by researchers in the future.
In this paper, I translated two eulogies written by Yu Sook gi, in order to make it easier for researchers to access the entire contents. Furthermore, through some inference, I discuss the possibility that, until the first half of the 18th century, the class of people who could read classical novels were women from noble families close to the royal family
