ABSTRACT

This study examines how Arts and Culture Education in South Korea, based on the theory of Interculturalism, can contribute to the identity formation and social integration of multicultural background students amidst the social change marked by their increasing population. The research first compares the conceptual distinctions between Multiculturalism and Interculturalism and analyzes the limitations and challenges facing multicultural education within the current Korean educational context. It then explores the potential of arts and culture education to serve as a practical tool for fostering intercultural competence. Furthermore, by analyzing the characteristics of arts and culture education in overseas multicultural settings, this paper discusses its value and practical feasibility within domestic multicultural education for achieving social integration. Ultimately, this study proposes that arts based intercultural education is an effective strategy for promoting multicultural background students’ language development, identity formation, and full social integration. This study also aims to enhance the intercultural competence of students from multicultural backgrounds and to propose specific educational directions and policy implications that can promote cross cultural understanding and social inclusion.
