ABSTRACT

This study investigates the glocality and cultural transformation of Korean bakery culture through the case of Sungsimdang in Daejeon. It examines how the bakery evolved into a cultural landmark by integrating local identity with global recognition, particularly through the rise of the “bakery tour” phenomenon. Employing the theoretical frameworks of glocality, placeness, and transformation, the research traces Sungsimdang’s historical development, its community ties, and the cultural meanings of its iconic products. The findings reveal that Sungsimdang transcends its regional origins to embody a dynamic intersection between locality and globalization. As a glocal cultural historical space, it exemplifies how local traditions adapt to global currents, generating new cultural value and reshaping Korea’s bakery landscape. Ultimately, the study highlights Sungsimdang as a vital model for understanding how local identity can be reimagined and globalized within contemporary Korean food culture.
