ABSTRACT

This study investigates the integration of generative AI into advanced Korean language learning by examining how high level learners utilize ChatGPT as part of their study routines. The participants were ten Korean language learners at TOPIK levels 5 and 6 who reported daily use of ChatGPT. A mixed-methods design was employed, incorporating a structured survey and semi structured interviews to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Findings reveal that learners predominantly engaged with ChatGPT for complex linguistic tasks, including academic writing, grammar refinement, and presentation preparation. Rather than accepting AI-generated output uncritically, participants actively evaluated and revised the content based on their linguistic competence and contextual understanding. Moreover, learners employed self-regulated strategies to address the limitations of ChatGPT, such as its tendency to produce overly formal expressions or lack contextual nuance. These results suggest that ChatGPT functions not simply as a language resource, but as a metacognitive partner that facilitates reflective and autonomous learning processes. The study offers pedagogical implications for incorporating generative AI into advanced Korean language education, particularly in supporting learner autonomy and cognitive engagement.
