ABSTRACT

Koryo's early celadon was well known to begin being made under the influence by China's Yue kiln, and there have been many different opinions and views about its beginning time. When all the archaeological records of Koryo's early celadon and Yue kiln were compared and analyzed, however, the beginning time of Koryo's early celadon was highly likely to be around the 940's. Even though Koryo's early celadon was begun under the direct influence by Yue kiln, the unfolding aspects are clearly different from Yue kiln's in terms of shapes, patterns and firing techniques. This trend lasted through the whole early period of Koryo celadon. This means that Koryo's early celadon had been begun under the influence by Yue kiln, but thereafter it remained uninfluenced by Yue kiln through the whole early period of Koryo celadon. The reason for the uninfluenced relation for a long period between Koryo's early celadon and Yue kiln is deeply related to a fact that Koryo white porcelain started to be produced immediately after the beginning of Koryo's early celadon. Producing white porcelain at Koryo's early celadon kiln sites was attributed to the influence by kiln of the northern Liao. After that, Koryo white porcelain was considered as more precious one in its value than Koryo celadon, which accordingly led to the total extinction of Koryo's early celadon kilns in the Midwestern Korean peninsula at the end of 10th century.
