AB - The purpose of this study is to clarify the source of conflict and confrontation over the serious of the two Koreas on the Northern Limit Line on the Western Sea(NLL). NLL issue in terms of assessing the legitimacy of the conflicting positions of the two Koreas, and even just within South Korea have their differences.
Maritime demarcation line is not clearly identified in the Armistice Agreement. Just five western islands(PAENGYONG-DO, TAECOHNG-DO,SOCHONG-DO, YONPYONG-DO, U-DO) were placed on separate regulations.
That is just the boundary of Hwanghae Province and Gyeonggi Province intended to show control over the western islands, western five islands is a rule that a lines can not be connected. These limits in the truce talks was the result of compromise between the opinions of both sides.
The conflict in western sea is not been expressly due to that Maritime Demarcation Line is not explicit. In the Eastern Sea, extension of the Military Demarcation Line in the ground has been implicitly recognized as a Maritime demarcation line between the parties unliked Western sea. If so, why are there frequent conflicts in the Yellow Sea. The jurisdiction of five western islands are at the core of the problem.
The Communist side, first proposed the concept of maritime demarcation line in the truce talks. United Nations has agreed to withdraw troops from the the rear area of the North that United Nations has been occupied. Instead, UN raised newly concept of the jurisdiction of the coastal islands.
Therefore territorial issue was a issue, the Communist side conceded jurisdiction of the western five islands(서해 5도) by the UN.
View the process of truce talks, the two sides agreed that extension of the Military Demarcation Line of the ground as the maritime border. After the debate, the final agreement was determined by the forces of both sides.
