AB - The first Korean Government Sponsored Students in the U.S. has appeared since V-J Day. The headquarters of United States Army in Korea called on U.S. Government to study Korean student in the U.S. from October, 1945 to June, 1948, but this project had could not put into practice because of federal budget shortfall. War Department accepted USAMGIK’s demand and Educational and Informational Survey Mission to Korea’s recommend. War Department came to conclusion that 35 Korean students send to U.S. Higher Education Institute. U.S. Government decided to cover the travel expenses with GARIOA funds, tuition and living expenses of 35 Korean students with foreign currency owned by the Republic of Korea. The Scholarship Committee and The Korean Committee on Study and Training in the United States in charge of the selection of 35 Korean Government Sponsored Students in the U.S. from June 30, 1948 to July 1949. Institute of International Education in charge of educational institute arrangement of 35 Korean students. Korean Government Sponsored Student’s selection work was first, it was serious of confusion. As a result, some of first selected students had replaced by completely different students. Although there was confusion, selected Korean Government Sponsored Students after studying in U.S. had played a pivotal role in education and economic rehabilitation.
