ABSTRACT

The era of digital historical materials is also applicable to North Korean resources. Various forms of digital services are being provided, including lists of collected materials, original images, and texts. This means that North Korean materials can now be utilized anytime and anywhere, and we are in an environment where we can produce various research results by utilizing the abundance of North Korean materials. Identifying which materials have been digitized and how each institution's digital collection is organized is a basic prerequisite for using digital historical materials. The provision of digital historical materials varies by institution and depends on the nature of the platform. Therefore, identifying the composition and characteristics of the materials provided by each site is helpful for efficiently utilizing various forms of digital resources. With these points in mind, the main purpose of this study is to present in detail the process of constructing the North Korean basic historical materials database (DB) to enhance its usability. Additionally, since the process of building the North Korean basic historical materials DB includes research on materials and information analysis, this paper aims to demonstrate that the process of analyzing materials and constructing the DB is a series of research activities. It also seeks to re-examine the significance of researchers selecting topic items and planning and promoting database projects. Through this paper, it is hoped that the North Korean basic historical materials DB introduced will be actively utilized as historical resources for researchers and the public to objectively understand and study North Korea.
