ABSTRACT

Christianity is known as a religion which puts great stress on filial duty. The Old and New Testaments include many teachings emphasizing filial piety. Among Jesus’ teachings, however, there are some talks that sound contrary to the practice of obedience to parents, which understandably shock bible readers(Mk 10:29-30, Mt 8:21-22, 10:34-36, 23:9, Lk 9:61-62, 14:26-27, and their parallels). This paper aims to examine those talks to reveal Jesus’ real lessons concerning filial duty. Jesus’ comments that seemingly challenge the common filial practice are actually rhetorical devices to show the importance and urgency of his own discipleship. These expressions paradoxically manifest that Jesus deeply appreciates the significance of filial piety. This is well supported by the analyses of Jesus’ attitude to the fifth commandment, his teaching about God as ‘father’, and ‘son’ Jesus’ absolute obedience toward ‘father’ God. This teaching of Jesus serves as reminder about the importance of filial piety to modern Christians who experience many domestic and social problems caused by lack of filial duty.
