ABSTRACT

This article is exegetical/socio-cultural inquiry of Luke's understanding on the women in Luke-Acts. Although it wasn't caught up through early studies, but there are promises about the equality of men and women in Luke-Acts. To analyze the promises, I took a look how it is dealt with the method of showing woman(Lk 9:10-17; Mk 7:24-30; Lk 10:1-20; 24:6-8; 10:1-20; 19:37; 22:14-38). it is proved that the crowd of disciples are the complex community of men and women, and it is very emphasized, also. Besides, Peter reminds us that the promise of the descent of the spirit is proclamation on the coming of new age for both men and women through the quotation and revision of Joel 2:28-32a(Acts 2:17-21). At the end, in the basis of this analysis, I tried to re-read the stories of women in Luke-Acts from a Hyo theological perspective:'How women can be the member of the family of God?' Among the women who Luke introduced us, I examined the story of Martha, Mary, and Lydia. These women can be the prominent new model overcome the traditional role of women. First of all, Mary shows the new image of woman(Lk 10:38-42). Second, Lydia is presented a church leader of the 1st century. She unifies the strength of the traditional image of women and the directivity in new image of women(Acts 16:13-15, 40). Through this study, Luke's understanding of the women-'How the women can be the member of the family of God?' we can say that: "Women can be the member of the family of God by the same method and through same equality." I found out the essence of the gospel which opens for everybody without any distinction, and it is described especially in the women stories. For this reason, I would like to call Luke as a Hyo theologian of the 1st century.
