ABSTRACT

'Hyo' is a moral standard that clarifies the order of rank between parents and children. It refers to child's whole behavior based on respectful and thankful emotions toward parents, which is the remarkable cultural symbol of our people. Therefore, in order to investigate 'Hyo', our people's symbol, I endeavored to scrutinize every day lives of the public since it shows reality clearly more than any other way. Besides, I found that our old literary works connote such a reality in that creative stories in literature share the phases of the times. Thus, I aim to critically examine the types of tales about filial behavior which is the most crucial virtue in the moral aspects among folk tales of Jeonju․Wanju which contain stories based on reality, and specify their meanings. In order to achieve this goal, I employed the theory of 'Categorization of Hyo' by Park, Cheolho and 'Factors of filial piety consciousness' by Ryu, Hangeun as theoretical backgrounds. Under two theories above, I could verify that the virtue of Hyo-obedience, affection, continuity, proxy- appeared commonly in folktales. Especially, I could feel the breath of our people's and ancestors' thought of 'Hyo'. This study will reconstruct the form of 'Hyo' in Korean literature and the meaning of 'Hyo' with a diachronic perspective.
