AB - The purpose of this study is to look at the meaning of filial piety as perceived by international students from the CIS countries, and to observe the difference between filial piety in Korea and that of their home countries. For this, 5 international students from the CIS countries were selected as research subjects and in-depth interviews were conducted with them from September to November of the year 2015. The interview was based on the Korean consideration of “The favor of the king, the teacher and the father are the same” and analyzed the students’ perception of filial piety categorizing them into country, teacher and parents.
The filial piety culture perceived by them was shown as follows.
First, as the filial piety for the country, they want to become a bridge and cultivate a talented individual for the development of their country. Also, they want to contribute to making their home country known and help those people who moved to Korea from their countries.
Second, as the filial piety for the teacher, they perceive continuously walking the path of a scholar, helping their professor with research, graduating without misadventure and adapting well..
Third, as the filial piety for parents, they perceive living well in Korea, doing something good for parents, inquiring the health of the parents, succeeding, and not receiving financial help from them..
This research was an opportunity to examine filial piety as perceived by international students and is expected to provide baseline data for the education of filial duty in Korea.
