ABSTRACT

On the basis of the text of "The Very Slow Hours" written by Choi, Il-Nam, here examines how the nature of discourse on the old age and a problem of inevitable death combust and embody itself. Although the main theme of old age novels diversely indicates organic, diseases, dependency, remarriage, family conflict, sex, reminiscence, etc., death is the most important leitmotif as an underlying problem in later life. Rapid industrialization and urbanization brought Korean society a change of family structure into nuclear family. The elders lose the capability to work and be neglected in a capitalist society. The elderly gradually fall from community members to the position of the absolute others. According to the thesis such as "the status of the elders is to be given, not to obtain" or "the old man is who can not do anything, but who exists," the fate of an old man would be depends on the interests of the community. This script desires to explore how the discourse on death, one of the key features of the old age in the field of literature, be narrated. To begin with, the concept and research trend on old age novels is reviewed in current history of Korean literature. From a perspective of Filial piety(Hyo) study, the significance of this study can be shown to understand the elderly life and as a complementary reference to literature and the study of Filial piety by extracting the recognition of death, a central discussion of old age.
