ABSTRACT

Zhu Xi(朱熹) called it Bonyǒnjisǒng(本然之性) which means a human being has Innate goodness. But Dasan claimed Bonyǒnjisǒng is originated from Yeoraejangsǒng(如來藏性) of Buddhist concept. He considered Han-yang kung fu(涵養工夫) is in collusion with Zen mediation (坐禪). Zhu Xi practiced a form of daily meditation called Quiet sitting(靜坐) similar to, but not the same as, Zen mediation. His meditation did not require the cessation of all thinking as in Buddhism. Although Zhu Xi criticized Buddhism as a heresy, Dasan considered thought of Zhu xi is also based on Buddhist conception. So he considered it can not solve the problems of Chosǒn(朝鮮). But there is a controversy about whether his thought is reasonable estimation or not.
