ABSTRACT

Local appropriation of English by highlighting English roles through critical perspectives is focused. Although an underlying relation between English and the local is ideological, English as a tool for communication is overly emphasized. Thus, to see realities beyond transparent relations between English and the local, the significance of looking into historical contexts of their relationship construction and dynamics of local people’s perception on ideologies of English is emphasized. As a result, Korean English context is the product of interplay between English as a global language, relations between English and world economic and political powers, and local appropriation of English based on local ideology in the processes of globalization. As for 108 Korean English users’ perception of English researched using a qualitative data analysis based on data collected through interviews and essay writings, English not only affects people’s hegemonic relations but also produces conflicts between individuals and within an individual.
