ABSTRACT

In The Erotic Phenomenon, Marion argues that by an erotic reduction, the meaning of truth as certitude est put in doubt. This means that the self is given not mainly through doubt, as in Descartes’ Cogito ergo sum, but through the fact that one is loved by someone else: only through this love from the outside can the existence of the self as lover or be loved be justified. On this point, Marion also claims that the traditional metaphysical depiction of the human being as the ego cogito forgets what is most unique to humanity: the question of love. Thus ‘to be or not to be’ is not the main question of the philosophical quest. The human being risks vanity and nihilism by referring to the question of certitude; only when this being inaugurates the erotic reduction by asking ‘Does anybody out there love me?’, can it become authentically human. Yet even this question leads to a type of ‘ontological’ vanity (as being loved is valued more than love) and also to the impossibility of self-love, and so the erotic reduction must be radicalized with the question, ‘Can I love first, even without being loved in return?’ This radicalization allows us to find out new possibility of intersubjectivity based on the erotic phenomenon.
