ABSTRACT

This article unravels the complex value hierarchies and relationship between the individual and the nation of the discourses in Sasangkyeo that has become the representative text of Korean liberalism after Korean War. In the early 1950s some discourses of “individual” concept in Sasangkyeo had a totalitarian element that was influenced by Statism of Japanese imperial universities in 1940s which Korean intellectuals had been educated. Another discourses lied in strong liberal heritage from Northwestern Christian nationalism in the colonial period. The latter sharply developed into a political liberal concept and existential one in the late 1950s. Also, in the 1960s, “individual” concepts showed a more fragmented pattern.
