ABSTRACT

Many North Korean defectors are living isolated in a ghettoized area of South Korea. Their adaptation to South Korea based on the assimilation model is not only unsuccessful, but also does not receive equal treatment in contact with South Korean society or South Korean residents. The purpose of this study is to analyze the discriminative experience of North Korean defectors through the qualitative meta-analysis by applying the concept of xenophobia and to suggest a procedure of integrating North and South Koreans. As a result of qualitative meta-analysis, xenophobia related to North Korean defectors was categorized as ideological antipathy, traditional hostility, economic anger, discrimination, neglect and contempt, inferior existence, maladjustment or deviance. Based on these results, I proposed a plan to integrate social justice-human rights centered North and South Korean residents.
