ABSTRACT

This study is to analyze <Roaring Currents> and <Sea Fog>, which have the characteristics of Ocean films. And we look at the universality and the specificity together, focusing on the importance of the sea shown in these films. To do this, we first check the genre characteristics of Ocean films. It also confirms the format and contents of the Hollywood Ocean films. Hollywood marine films represent an odyssey-like mythical fantasy and an evolved narrative of the West, and formally represent a blockbuster. There are some similar forms and contents in Korean Ocean films. The sense of crisis of the sea shown in Korean Ocean films is connected with our present reality. The film makes us recognize the internal and external political realities, the situation of division between North and South Korea, and the unequal distribution of wealth. <Roaring Currents> led the group to victory in the crisis of the Imjin War with individual beliefs. This work contains nationalism based on the heroic myth of Yi Sun-sin. And <Sea Fog> chose the sea and sea fog as tools to express individual desires. The film emphasizes the restoration of humanity. The film emphasizes the attitude of humanity and reflection on human beings who have become selfish. In addition, they share past events, giving persuasiveness to the narrative's probabilities. It reveals the essence of a Ocean film by asking questions about the roles of community and individuals.
