ABSTRACT

One of important topics in clarifying the properties of Hangul information processing is on whether the location of syllable is specific or flexible in lexical acess. This study was conducted to investigate on whether the lexical variables can moderate Hangul syllable transposition effect, which is one of types of letter localization. Word frequency, neighborhood, and syllable frequency are main variables in lexical access. The research method was investigating the presence of interaction effect with the lexical variables manipulated. The results showed that no interaction effect was found, indicating rigidness of syllable localization in processing. The results implicates that the syllable letter of Hangul is localized firmly in a perceptual stage, and word frequency, neighborhood, syllable frequency acts in the following information stage. Hangul processing mechanism on results and related theoretical discussion are executed.
